Intuition and Resilience

The topic of practitioner strategies for self-care has become a front-and-center conversation at health and wellness conferences - and no wonder! Practitioner burnout is on the rise and the statistics are shocking.

All wellness providers, from allopathic to Complementary and Alternative, can suffer the effects of both compassion fatigue and burnout.

I was honored to speak at this year’s American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) conference with my colleague Lori Johnson, RN, OCN, AHN-BC, on the topic of Medical Intuition skills for for focused, intuitive mind-body self-care.

A range of speakers addressed resilience from many holistic perspectives - through expressive arts, tapping for stress management, guided imagery, hypnosis and even conscious grief processes to help in unifying heart and soul.

Burnout and Compassion Fatigue

A search in the PubMed archive at the U.S. National Institutes of Health's National Library of Medicine yielded over 15,000 scholarly articles on compassion fatigue and burnout. There are some differences in those terms worth noting.

The American Institute of Stress defines “Burnout” as: A cumulative process marked by emotional exhaustion and withdrawal associated with increased workload and institutional stress.

“Compassion Fatigue” is defined as: The emotional strain of exposure to working with those suffering from the consequences of traumatic events.

Some recent statistics:

  • One-third of nurses in the U.S. report an emotional exhaustion score of 27 or higher, which is considered to be "high burnout."

  • Doctors are suffering from burnout and it’s having a profound effect. A recent study by the Archives of Internal Medicine found that out of 7,000 physicians more than 41% reported at least one symptom of burnout.

  • In fact, suicide rates among doctors are at epidemic proportions, with the latest rates quoted at more than twice that of the general population. Statics for nurse suicide rates are tragically high as well.

  • Compassion fatigue can affect practitioners in any wellness field, including mental healthcare, Complementary and Alternative, and biofield therapies.

The good news is that the subject has now come out of the shadows and into greater awareness. Healthcare organizations are now answering the call, and many positive changes are happening.

Intuition Development to Boost Resilience

Intuitive development and mind-body techniques are powerful skills to enhance our access to well-being. Using simple intuition skills, we can learn to notice and release stressors in the moment. We can also open a dialogue of intuitive communication with our own bodies to powerfully shift our energy towards healing.

Three simple intuitive strategies that can help you manage your personal energy balance daily are:

  • Grounding

  • Shielding

  • Releasing

I’ve created the Energy Essentials™ Guided Meditation series to walk you through each of the steps. Enjoy!

You can expand on these key intuitive skills for self-care and healing in the Medical Intuition for Healing Workshop. This workshop is designed to give you practical, useful intuitive healing skills to build resilience and combat burnout in the workplace and at home, and are intended to revive and restore your energy - physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.
